By musical foundation I mean, the structure on which it was made possible for Gibbard to write those melodies and lyrics. None of the songs would exist at all in any form if it was just Gibbard. So easy to pick out the real musicians who have commented on this... If you have ever picked up a guitar and wanted to play a cover of someone else's song you would realize that the purpose is not to "out-do" the actual creator, but to put your own spin on it. Gibbard's version is just that, his own take, and it sounds just fine to me.

I was at this show. Ben was excellent. This was also the first time I ever saw Johnathan Rice live. He was great. For some reason, however, he got much more respect than Dave Bazan. Idiots talked all through Bazan's set, at times to the degree that you could no longer hear the music. LESSON LEARNED: don't go to shows of well-known acoustic artists at Metro. The yuppie fans are meat-heads who only know good music from outlets such as the OC or Gossip Girl. They respect nothing else.
