blaming the USDA for these kinds of things is a lot like blaming the cops for every drunken driver that hits someone. you can't be in every place at all times, and when they are there, it's a hostile situation (notice the people cheering when the inspector was driven out). it's a thankless, underpaid, crappy gov't job. blame the people that drive the market - those that insist on "purebred" dogs, regardless of the quality or horrible source.

The Amish community is now seen in a different lime light. They are suppose to be against violence. Each one of these buyers should be required to witness euthanasia in animal shelters before they are allowed to buy any dogs for breeding. This is why there is an overabundance of strays/homeless animals today. I don't know if it's illegal (it should be) but charges must be made for these mills & the people who purchase them to breed. Petco & Petsmart help with adoption probably because they are so known. But many lesser known pet stores I ran into unfortunately get their animals via mills. :(

I own a puppy mill it doesnt run this way. our dogs are kept in a conditioned building and fed three times a day and females are not impreginated every time they come to heat and dogs there are kept in clean cages and they are not crowded + they receive vet care and are not inbred and pups are looked after in my puppy mill and all dogs are bathed once a week + they are all fat and chubby and when a dog gets sick we quarantine him and all our dogs are pedigree (FYI)

You are right girlie that is why we should raise our own meat. The same way with dogs if you get a dog from a friend even if it was and accidental litter. It doesn't make sense to buy a high dollar dog from a puppy farm because they probably aren't bred right anyway.

It would certainly help the problem if Vets could provide inexpensive gelding for horses. It's a simple procedure;seen it done many times.What about a a subsidized program so that a Vet could offer the procedure at a lower cost.Last time I had a colt gelded (2 years ago) I think it was about $400.00.If you have a crypt orchid it's alot more...one of our colt's had this.

The meat market for horses is much better then letting them suffer from abuse at unwanted homes! Closing auction marts and meat plants is completely ridiculous the agriculture industy relies on these markets especially the cattle industry. it doesnt mean they are abused when they get there. Closing these plants will be a detriment to the horse industry. I know the whinny of foals and unwanted horses is depressing but id rather see them go for slaughter then die of starvation and neglect.

If people would stop breeding any mare they have with the stallion down the street, I bet slaughter would at least decrease. There is SOOOOO much irresponsible breeding out there. "That child's pony" probably bucked off it's kid & stomped him in the ground. Only the dangerous & the culls end up @ auction. You can't stop these auctions. If they aren't allowed to be slaughtered for human consumption they will still be killed for dog food, glue, etc & shipped to Mexico for meat. This is sick. Its only going to get worse in this climate. Really, no animal, food or otherwise, should suffer like this. But as a horse person, horse slaughter makes me want to barf. The racing industry needs to be stopped, it is the MAIN culprit of producing surplus, crippled, crazy animals that nobody wants. MA banned dog racing last tuesday. States need to do the same for the horses.

Horses are going for $1 to $500 (at best)..Do not use auctionhouses to rid of your pet animals..not the best choice! Do your horse a favor, euthanize before auction is an option! More people need to be aware that horse auctions are not ways to get rid of horses..most WILL end up at the slaughterhouses nowdays (economy). Ughh I can't stand to even think people can put such amazing creatures trough this. My friends and I want to start a rehabilitation center when we get out of school for horses like this. Then make sure they go to good homes because no animal deserves this even if they are lame or "unsafe"

Really, you need to look at the breeders of these horses. They are responsible for over-production, meaning that the price of horses is so low that the meat price is more than the riding horse price. This is just the end - it's those people who can't resist breeding a sweet foal...that are the real horse killers.
