hmm... widze ze jedna kobieta tutaj duzo pisze :) uwazam ze takie mocne slowa jak "cwele" nie sa potrzebne. wiadomo ze kazdy ma prawo mowic to co mysli. nie potepiam tworce tego filmu ale uwazam ze to moze dotknac kazda kobiete. Terry Stafford was not trying to sound like Elvis. It's just the way he happened to sound when singing a song that Elvis had also done. Big mistake not releasing the Elvis version in 62 yes but for Terrys sake it was a good thing. The guy that created all the music on this track could have copied the E version exactly, he did not and it quickly became #3 when The Beatles held the other top 6 spots.

hmm maybe he does have a better backup etc. but i think people get too hung up on those things. a song is more than just an arrangement. its more than a group of individuals all workin together in an arrangement to make a noise, thats wy Elvis was the best, his songs were more than just that, he put something special into it - poured his heart out.

And that, folks, is the way music was done in the middle fifties that many people like to make fun of. What the generations of today are slowly coming to realize is "hey, there WAS good music before 1980. What many people don't know is there is great music from the late thirties through today. All one has to do is look for it and you can find it. People should look at some of the artists from other countries, too. America certainly doesn't not have a monopoly on talent.

Hi, this is Jo's daughter, Amy. We watched this and other videos last Tuesday when we came home from her funeral. What a comfort and joy to hear her voice and see her as she was when I was little. She is an amazing singer. She really keeps the tempo and the key. In those days, the acoustics were so bad that they had to sing really loud to compensate for it. This was hard for women especially, but not for Jo. She makes the impossible seem so easy.

The critics love singers like Holliday and Edith Piaf, who sound near-suicidal. In any event, Jo Stafford deserves to be remembered in the same league as Ella, Holliday, Clooney, Lee. Your argument has holes in it. Ella Fitzgerald was highly critically acclaimed and probably more well known than Billie Holiday. Ella also always appeared joyful to be singing and her personal life was never profoundly troubled like that of Holiday's.

I absolutely loved her. Sorry she passed away in July. I grew up with Jo Stafford's hits, her voice as familiar to me as my own mother's. I wrote her a long fan letter in 1998 and received a lovely card and autographed photo from her in less than a week. (Margaret Whiting had given me her address.) She'll be greatly missed.

A lot of people screw up the meaning of "perfect pitch", wrongly taking it to mean the ability to sing on key. So if I may, for those who don't understand the term, "perfect pitch" is the ability to either identify the frequency or musical name of a specific tone, or reproduce a frequency, frequency level, or musical pitch without comparing the tone with any objective reference tone. I.E., if someone says, give me an "E", she can sing it perfectly without needing the piano as a guide!

Some of the "modern" stuff in my opinion doesn't have the same lasting effects that music such as this has - it soothes the senses and is just good to share with others. When I was growing up I gave my grandmother a book that she filled out - it included all of her "favorites"-my grandfather died when my dad was 12. She listed this song as her favorite song in the book. Last year my dad died suddenly. This song means so much to me, it did then and it means more than ever now. thank you for 'sharing' your mother's amazing talent with the wide world...I have loved her ever since i found my parents 78s...the first that grabbed me was the incredible pairing of the hysterical 'I'm My Own Grandma' with the the sublime 'Haunted Heart' but the I found the others and came to realize that most of what I thought of as "40s music" was Jo Stafford. So sorry for your loss. Jo Stafford's recording of "You Belong to Me" is one of my favorite recordings ever. Ignore the haters. GI Jo brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. Well life has a habit of whittling away at you in one form or another but nothing more than that. Mom died in 1999 and Dad is 91 now and in good shape. I've had a few heartaches along the way but nothing that hasn't mellowed into a good memory. May you enjoy the same...

We all miss and appreciate Jo so much. Indeed this is a later version than the original hit. I believe Jo had switched from Columbia to Capitol and they wanted her to re-record some of her hits. The good news is, as this song demonistrates, the new recordings were extremely good and were also recorded in hi-fidelity stereo.

Indeed, they were expensive. My boss (now deceased) was a TV repairman in the early 50's. He told the story of a farmer in New York who bought a new set and took it back to his farm. Well, it didn't work. When my boss went to his house and took the back off, it had a grand total of 5 TV (vacuum) tubes in it. The set was so insensitive it only worked in town. Out on the farm (which wasn't that far from NYC, it couldn't pick up a signal.

I took a few guitar lessons from Tim Stafford in the late 70's when I was a little kid in Johnson City, TN. He was awesome even back then. In the mid 80's I switched to a thumbpick and a Chet Atkins style, but I still remember a lot of the licks Tim showed me, just do them now with a thumbpick. Tim rules flatpicking!!

But then Ella too had enormous respect for melody and lyric. Her most important recorded work was the Song Books, which mostly required her to sing straight to tasteful accompaniments provided by Riddle, May, Weston, etc. I love Ella but I keep the cotton wool handy though for when she ventures into scat.

The important thing to note is that the Hodges/Webster album was titled Jo + Jazz (rather than Jo Sings Jazz), underlining the fact that Jo was simply being Jo, but to an accompaniment provided by jazz musicians. How much more satisfying would it have been to a backdrop of strings rather than honking sax and muted trumpet twittering away behind her. The album was mostly ballads and light swingers anyway, but she was indeed perfectly able to swing too, as evidenced in those duets with Ella.

She was a unique singer who really let the song "sing itself" but don't disrespect the artistry of great jazz singers and musicians by gratuitously dumping on jazz. Listen to Jo's records with Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster, as well as Jo's duets with Ella Fitzgerald on Jo's British TV show, and take the cotton out of your ears!

Oh PLEASE don't saddle Jo with the Jazz tag. She was always a popular vocalist of the first order, but had too much respect for the great composers and lyricists to mess with the melody and lyric of their songs. Improvisation and (worse) scat singing, beloved of the jazz fraternity, was mercifully not the Stafford way - or indeed the style of other great vocalists such as Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney etc.

I had the extreme pleasure of being under Terell's tutelage at Temple University...something I HIGHLY recommend for any student serious about his jazz and/or trumpet musicianship. I was in his Lab Band (02-06). I now direct the lab band at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO as a Graduate student. If it wasn't for the education I received from Terell I would never be able to do this job effectively. He's one of the most generous professors I have ever had.
