i had so much fun doing this in high school i miss it
By: Fender9117. on 05 Nov 08, 06:14:20
Actually, you must wet the bad. that creates a suction to the clay. otherwise the clay will not stick or stay centered.

Thank you for posting this. It's a beautiful video, very clear and instructive. Excellent camera work. The explanation AFTER the process is a very effective touch. 5 stars and my hat off to you.

You make it look a lot easier than it actually is! I just started pottery throwing today, and had a hard time raising it to a cylinder. I guess I have to practice. ;)

I wet my bats so my piece doesn't dry on the bottom and fly off. I find my clay sticks fine.

such a beautiful process. i love pottery.
By: flippinflyingmonkey. on 11 Sep 08, 17:42:58
you are not really meant to wet the board because the clay doesn't stick to the board as well, but its your choice, you also need to imagine the pot is bigger then it is when you are pulling up otherwise you end up with a bad rim.
By: anubistj. on 31 Aug 08, 19:09:30
My bats are home-made from 3/4 particle board. These were scraps from a cabinet shop. The most important thing about using bats is to make a wire cut soon after throwing within 1 hour. Then cut again a few times as the pieces set up. This along with compressing the bottom during throwing will prevent the dreaded bottom cracks as they dry. Tony
By: speltalyons. on 17 Aug 08, 16:06:20
What is your bat made of? All the bats I've seen are flexible. Also, since I am the epitome of the "starving artist," I wondered if I can create the throwing bats out of various other things that are not necessarily expensive materials...thanks for the video--it was quite helpful.

I do enjoy watching the videos, do you know of any that are recorded so that the viewer is "looking over" the potter's shoulder? Then my brain might not be so confused with right and left hands! Yes..I do have problems..lol
By: gizzard33. on 08 Jul 08, 01:17:48
No, I'm just a fellow learner! If you are open to advice: a good way to learn as you watch these videos is to observe the body positions and movements. Try to watch the person's hands more than you watch the clay. And then also, watch the whole body, not just the hands. You can even imitate the movements as you watch. Then practice what you saw with clay, and find out what works for you. Also, relaxed concentration, or "intention" is important. Happy Throwing!
By: IrisATdb. on 07 Jul 08, 21:57:31
ty for taking time to reply to my question. Do you have a pottery demo on here also? I need to watch them all and hope I learn something!
By: gizzard33. on 07 Jul 08, 20:46:47
It could be that you need softer clay, but if issue seems your physical strength, check to see if you're bracing your elbow against your leg. You can put your elbow on the inside of your knee or thigh, and use that to anchor your arm. Your arm doesn't have to stay still on its own strength. You can even push just a little with your leg.
