you are not really meant to wet the board because the clay doesn't stick to the board as well, but its your choice, you also need to imagine the pot is bigger then it is when you are pulling up otherwise you end up with a bad rim.

My bats are home-made from 3/4 particle board. These were scraps from a cabinet shop. The most important thing about using bats is to make a wire cut soon after throwing within 1 hour. Then cut again a few times as the pieces set up. This along with compressing the bottom during throwing will prevent the dreaded bottom cracks as they dry. Tony

What is your bat made of? All the bats I've seen are flexible. Also, since I am the epitome of the "starving artist," I wondered if I can create the throwing bats out of various other things that are not necessarily expensive materials...thanks for the video--it was quite helpful.

No, I'm just a fellow learner! If you are open to advice: a good way to learn as you watch these videos is to observe the body positions and movements. Try to watch the person's hands more than you watch the clay. And then also, watch the whole body, not just the hands. You can even imitate the movements as you watch. Then practice what you saw with clay, and find out what works for you. Also, relaxed concentration, or "intention" is important. Happy Throwing!

It could be that you need softer clay, but if issue seems your physical strength, check to see if you're bracing your elbow against your leg. You can put your elbow on the inside of your knee or thigh, and use that to anchor your arm. Your arm doesn't have to stay still on its own strength. You can even push just a little with your leg.

It is so much fun to watch this potter. He has years of skill and talent. The clay looks slightly soft but when he cuts the pieces off they hold firmer than I would expect. He is neater than I am! I notice he wipes the "slop" from his right hand to his left hand which might make it possible for him to use less water. Check out your local community colleges for ceramics classes, thats where I learned. I had an amazing teacher and it was not that expensive. The hobby can pay for itself.

This was my favorite clip of this potter working. His posture is really good -- I think that's one thing that helps him work so effortlessly. I notice he bends from the hips, and he keeps the level of the wheel just below the level of his seat. Seems like he has efficient movement and a good ergonomic setup. Besides that, I really loved his pieces.

I love Hamada's throwing a lot.One interesting point to watch for. In Japan the wheel is going clockwise so the leading strong Right hand (if Hamada is right handed)is on the inside of the pot. In the west the leading right hand is on the outside of the pot. This makes quite a difference . All the best , guy wolff

Before the electric is the kick wheel, but even before that is just a very slow turning of the piece in an almost fix surface. All three ways have a deep effect on the result, but all three are still alive today and some people still prefer to use not even a kick or stick wheel, for instance in the southwest (USA) or in many parts of Mexico. As for myself I have tried all except the electric wheel. When it comes to writing I like handwriting and computer, not the typewriter.

Thank you. Again I see a relationship in the way a technology shapes the artist craft. Writing on the computer often means more revisions and in a smaller space of time. This video is so fascinating. You can move and alter text in ways not possible with hand writing or using a type writer. Old school writers attach a sense of nostalgia to using typewriters, but I think they are more cumbersome.

I was really quite surprised to see the enclosed top for a hot water bottle after several minutes of raising/lowering and sorting out a lip on the bottle form which I thought went rather wrong and then a change of plan seemed to appear. Interesting to see SH's thoughts evolve as perhaps, as I stand to be corrected, pots just evolve.

hello, My teacher Mick Arnup asked me which way I'd like the wheel to spin so I had a few goes at centering and liked clockwise. I have a Hamada wheel but I mostly use it for putting footrings on rectangular platters which are draped over a wooden hump mold. The usual reason given for clockwise wheels is that the right hand is usually stronger for using the stick. However lots of eastern potters Throw clockwise. My Japanese student Aya Ikeda also threw lefthanded although she is righthanded.

its a Frankensoldner. I had the chance to get a bunch of old soldner parts that didn't work made a new table top and did some adjusting to the foot peddle and got this. It goes fast but has less torque when I have 25lbs it bogs down. but Liek you see in the video it helps get those facets off.

Not all pottery has to be thin. Have you ever felt a Greg Crowe? All potters differ. Not all pieces have to be as dainty and thin as a Sandra Black piece. I keep my bases thick but well compressed and then I like to trim. He he, the cementruck that came with my cement got stuck in the mudd and my husband had to help drag it loos with ouer tractor. Ah, good thing to put the stone under the chimney as foundation, ther´s alot of preasure right under the chimney. You havn´t got a building around the kiln?

We couldnt poor a slab we didnt have energy to make it and a cement truck couldn't get to the kiln. we used large stone (50lbs- 100lbs) under the kiln walls and chimeny to level the area we used common brick (the red ones)

Cedar comes from the kiln site over the winter a few trees come down and we use those. the other wood is sawmill cut offs and they are all free we just have to transport them and chain-saw them to length the results are hard to know if it is from the wood or from the reduction the length the temp or the clay.

the house brick has been greatno cracking they are getting glassy on the inside. we use whatever wood we get. cedar I think was giving us the best heat to weight ratio. the amount of draft has been fine we are going to push to ^14 and Not sure if there will be enough pull. much of that is dependent on our stacking. we can really slow it down when we move flame around. You need to post some of you kiln videos.

So it sounds like you want to build a kiln. The wood use depends on what we want. We do not have a set schedule nor do i think we will. The chimney is as high as we could reach. I think 16 feet. the upper half is common house brick. when we built it we did not have access to a welder. we are adding it this spring. 18-42 hours I have a few more wood firing videos as well check em out. I've put off building my one at home due to the fire ban season here every summer in Australia - so no firing for a couple of months atleast. It is about a 160 cubic feet of space 120 of it for stacking. yeah theis design is not out of a book after we built it we saw a few other kilns built with some of the same thoughts. Its a few hundred feet from chittnango creek in cazenovia in a hill of a mill raceway. do not know how many brick anymore. its been fired 5 times. it will be fired about 3 times a year.

It would be nice if this person knew something about pottery making... for instance... pottery making began before the discovery of fire... not 1000 years ago in China... The first pots were reed baskets lined with mud. Baskets and clay coated fish were eventually placed in the fires to cook.. The fire hardened clay became very useful items to hold oil, water and grain....

Awesome massive kickwheel though- keeps momentum forever so you don't have to continually kick it to keep the speed up. Many of the great eastern master potters would use a wheel similar to this but they would sit crosslegged in front of it to get a more comfotable angle.

Pretty amazing wheel! Naturally developed muscular bodies are more adaptive to physical stress on one's back. Those of us who live in the so called more developed countries tend to be less physical in our development due to the use of modern convinces - a major disadvantage when it comes to overall physical conditioning. A person who develops naturally is in far better all round condition than a person working out in a Gym concentrating in specific muscle group development.

It's beyond me how in Asia they can do pottery with their hands so far from the center of their bodies and not break their back.

Your belief is correct, its in older technique that isn't used much these days. Your glaze has to melt together though in the firing so there is no run markes or distinctive layers showing on the finished pot. The glaze being used, celadon and tenmoku can be used with this process, a soak at final tempretaure ia an advantage

I believe he's using the suction to glaze the interior of the mug without having to pour into it or wax off the bottom. Rather cool technique to be sure.

Hey Simon, I imagine you go back to England to see your old Mom. You are a good son. How come Jeremy does not use thin rubber gloves when glazing? after many years of glazing I think it best to keep glaze materials off the skin. That is my opinion after 35 years... Seems a little dark there compared to sunny Spain. Here in upstate New York it also a little dark and cold.... Happy thanksgiving....

What was Jeremy doing with his mug at time 0:41, when he sorta dipped the mug in half way and then jerked it back out twice? Was that to get glaze on the inside by slosh/sucking it up into the vessel, without having to use something to pour glaze into the mug?

This may sound strange, but seeing the clay trimming spiralling off the pots is so "yummy". I love how it looks and the form that it makes once it it trimmed :) Enjoyed this clip for the same reasons as credenza1, casual conversations between the two of you was enjoyable.
